Vedas are considered to be the oldest literature of mankind. They are not only the ancient religious treatises but also the original source of several philosophical systems that evolved in India in the early historic period. Sanskrit, being the language of codification of several religious and philosophical systems, is considered to be a sacred language. The lecture will deal with the philosophical concepts presented in the Upanishads and also explore some of the basic ideas of the Astika Darshanas, especially those of the Sankhya, Yoga and Vaisheshika Darshanas.
About the Speaker
Dr. Ambarish Khare has completed his formal education in the field of Ayurveda.
He holds the post graduate and doctoral degrees in Sanskrit. Subjects of his special interest include Vedic Studies, Indian Epigraphy, Religion and Southeast Asian Cultures. He is presently working as an Assistant Professor of Sanskrit at Tilak Maharashtra Vidyapeeth (c/f University), Pune, India.
He is associated with a number of academic institutions such as the Asiatic Society of Mumbai and Samvidya Institute of Cultural Studies.
He has been appointed on the Editorial Board of the Department of Gazetteers, Ministry of Culture, Maharashtra Government.
